Fix Your Leaky Faucet

Homeowners can fix their leaky faucets, and save themselves an expensive call to a plumber.

You will need to shut off the water supply to the leaking faucet. This is typically found underneath the sink or the appliance. Most houses have these individual shut off valves for all the faucets. Now in certain exceptions, homes have just one main shut off valve for all the fixtures and you need to shut it down, which will temporarily turn off the water supply to the entire home, so in this case plan accordingly.

Here are the steps to take apart a leaky faucet and fix.

Now that you have shut off the water supply you will need to remove the faucet handle. You should see very small screws on the top or the back of the faucet handle. Now there could be cosmetic small plastic or metal caps that are on top of the screw. They will either pop our or also screw out, and then you can reach the screws. Make sure you have the proper size screwdrivers for this job. Remove them by turning counter clockwise.

Now that the handle is off you can see the faucet assembly. You can see the packing nut, which needs to be removed. Do so very gingerly with the right size adjustable wrench, or you can use pliers. Turn counterclockwise to remove the nut. Underneath this nut you will now see a spindle, which you can remove by turning it also counterclockwise.

Now you should see a screw that is holding the washer down. Remove the screw, turning the same way.

Now you can remove the washer. It is obviously very important to replace with the same size washer or matters could be worse. If you are at all in question run down to your local hardware store they will match you up with new proper size washers.

Now reassemble in the exact reverse order as above. This time turning everything clockwise. Turn the water supply back on and see if the leaky persists. If you still have a leaky faucet call your local licensed plumber.
