Is there a bad smell coming from your air conditioner?
Air conditioners are constantly warming and cooling, which results in the quick buildup of moisture. If this moisture isn’t drained efficiently molds, fungi, mildew will start growing in your a/c. If you don’t change your filters regularly you can build up bad odors in the filter.
So if you have this mold and mildew problem how do you get rid of the fungus and the smell? Below are a few steps to find the culprits of the smell and remove them.
- Locate your air conditioner’s condensation drain line. This should look to you like a plastic tube where the water drains out.
- Remove the drain line and flush it with a mixture of 30% bleach and 70% water to kill the mold and mildew. Let this to dry completely before you replace it.
- Next find the drip pan located near the heat exchange on your unit. Remove this tray and clean it thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Allow it to dry and then replace it.
- Open the top of your air conditioning unit to view the inside of it. You should use a flashlight and inspect every area of the inside of your unit. Look for anything that would cause bad odor or smells. Remove any debris you find. Next you want to spray a foaming coil cleaner and allow it to sit for ten minutes. This spray will soften and loosen dirt, grime and oil.
- Rinse off the the a/c unit with your water hose and continue to spray water through the a/c unit until all the foaming cleaner is removed and the water is clear.
