Air flow problems

If your furnace is turned on but there is no air flow or air flow problems then there is a mechanical problem.  One possibility is a worn part in the fan motor, which is impairing the performance of the motor. The cause could also be a bearing that is failing, or a worn out belt.  All of these are serious issues and likely require the services of a licensed heating and air conditioning expert

Heat exceeds set temperature

So you’ve set your thermostat to a certain temperature and the heat level exceeds the set temperature.  One possible cause is that the thermostat is mounted crookedly. If this looks to be the case, remove the cover to the thermostat, loosen the screws that hold the thermostat unit to the wall and then level the thermostat.  Retighten the screws and replace the cover. Another possible cause is that the thermostat heat anticipator needs adjusting.  This device is mounted in the center of many mechanical thermostats and it calibrates at which point the thermostat turns off the furnace burners. Gas furnace blower does not turn off

Does your gas furnace blower continue blowing and blowing and does not turn off? There are a few reasons this could be happening. Many theromostats have a “fan continuous” setting which, if enabled, would explain why the blower would not turn off. So change the setting off of fan continuous if this is the case and turn it to the “automatic” setting. If the setting is not the cause of the blower staying on the problem is likely a faulty fan limit control switch and this will have to be replaced. Furnace turns on and off too often

If your gas furnace turns on and off too frequently this could be caused by a few different issues. It could either be a thermostat problem, a blower problem or even a dirty air filter. The dirty filter is the first thing to check because it’s an easy fix. Go ahead and replace the filter and see if this fixes the gas furnace turning on and off too frequently. Furnace pilot light is out

Did your furnace pilot light go out? A pilot can extinguish or go out due to a strong draft, of unexpected wind,a dirty orifice or possible dirt in the gas tube. The burner in your gas furnace is ignited either by electronic ignition as found in most new, modern furnaces or with a pilot flame common in older style furnaces. Pilot Light will Not Stay Lit

If the pilot light will not stay lit, that is when you have stopped pushing down on the pilot light button, and then the pilot light goes out, then the issue is a faulty thermocouple.  It will need to be replaced and is a more complicated procedure with special tools involved.  We strongly suggest you hire a furnace technician for this work. Gas furnace makes noise

Is your gas furnace making a loud noise, at least louder than it used to be? If it makes a squealing sound or a low pitched rumble sound we may know the source of the problem? The high pitched squealing sound is usually the blower belt slipping. The first thing to check is proper belt tension in the belt. The belt should depress about 1″ at the center of span. If you haven’t replaced the air filter in the past 2-3 months, replace it and see if the heater produces more heat efficiently.
